Recently, I was asked to do some consulting/on-the-job training for one of our customers in the Greater Toronto Area. This was a sizable pump supplier & maintenance company that just bought our entry-level Easy-Laser E420 Shaft Alignment tool. They needed to align the two shafts (of the pump & motor) and later commission it into service for their customer. They were packaging the machine units together (bolting the pump and motor to the base frame while aligning the shafts) and it was to be shipped on a skid to their customer. Once the machine units and frame were delivered they were to do a final alignment check after the machine’s base was bolted to the foundation.

With over 25 years of experience in developing, manufacturing and marketing laser shaft alignment and measurement tools, we thought we would share some noteworthy facts that you perhaps did not know about alignment.
Getting the right angle can pull you out of a jam.
When we think of shaft alignment we usually think of one machine being the stationary and the other machine being the moveable. The normal preference is to use the driven (ie. pump) as the stationary and the driver (ie. motor) as the moveable. The reason behind this is that you don’t want to create pipe strain by moving the pump. Makes sense right? For some who don’t think beyond this, it limits their options.
