As the Canadian National Distributor of all Easy-Laser products we know a thing or two about precision laser measurement tools & metrology systems.

But what a precision laser measurement tool? What is geometric measurement? To know this we need to know what metrology is.

Metrology is the science of measurement. It establishes a common understanding of measurement units (think weights and measures). In the mechanical maintenance field we use Imperial and Metric units of measure. When measuring for confirmation or correction we use geometry which is the branch of mathematics concerned with the properties and relations of points, lines, surfaces etc.

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (Also ISO) created the standard for Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) which is a system for defining and communicating engineering tolerances (ASME) Y14.5-2009. Our industry sometimes calls it geometric measurement and we use precision laser measurment tools to measure things like straightness, flatness, square, parallel, etc.

All of these geometrical measurements with Easy-Laser® is based upon the same principle. All measurement values will reflect the position of the detector relative the laser beam. To be able to use the measurement values for adjustment and documentation, you need to select absolute references/zero points. These can be either points on the measurement object or the horizontal plane (level).
